A fine sea chart of the middle portion of the English Channel displaying the relationship between the south coast of England and the north coast of France focusing on the Channel Islands. It was published by Gerard van Keulen (1678-1726) as an updated chart from those published earlier by his father, Johannes van Keulen (1654-1715). The map is rotated 90̊ to the east and its earliest recorded publication is in the 1704 edition of ‘De Neiuwe Groote Ligtende Zee-Fakkel’.

The English coast extends from Torbay in Devon to Arundel in Sussex including the Isle of Wight and Southampton. The focus in the Channel Islands is on coastal features with only a handful of inland towns recorded. French coast extends from Treguier in Brittany to the Normandy beaches. Two compass roses help with orientation. The map bears five boxed panels lower left, three of which include titles in Dutch, French, and English. The fourth bears the imprint of both Johannes and Gerard van Keulen. Below that are a series of useful scales. The pagination ’13’ appears in the lower right corner. This is an example of the second state in which arrows delineating the currents are added. Next to them is the hour at which high tide is reached in relation to other locations. This work is derived from Edmond Halley. The compass lines are now extended onto land. The date of this second state has yet to be determined.

The firm of Van Keulen was founded around 1678 by Johannes van Keulen and in 1680 he published the ‘Zee Atlas’. The multi volume ‘Zee Fakkel’ followed soon after. On his 50th birthday he left the management of the firm to his talented son Gerard. Gerard set about replacing many of his father’s sea charts the first of which was published in 1698. Koeman states that he ‘was endowed with talent. He was a skilful engraver and proficient in mathematics and navigational science. Gerard was responsible for the scientific basis of the firm of Van Keulen.’ Koeman (1967-70) Vol. IV p. 375 no. 192, Keu 64 (1704) & Keu 28 (1709).
