The title for this map is misleading as it does in fact relate to the Indian Peninsula. The reference is most likely due to the large presence of the East India Company in the subcontinent. The Companies presence and effective control of India arose out of the Seven Years War with France during which several conflicts occurred on Indian soil. Led by Robert Clive the Company defeated the French and after the Battle of Plassey gained control of Bengal. This is the most important and detailed map of India following the significant changes and also before the great Indian Survey.
