This is a separately published rare Revolutionary War broadside map displaying New York and the surrounding country during the summer of 1776. Engraved by J. Barber of Holborn Hill, London, it is centred on the town at the tip of Manhattan and from here concentric circles at five mile intervals radiate out. The map extends as far north as the Tappan Sea and east to Oyster Bay. A detailed table below the map is entitled ‘Chronological table of the most interesting occurrences since the commencement of hostilities in North America.’ It begins on Dec. 16, 1773, with the destruction of tea in Boston and ends with Aug. 29, 1776 with the Provincials under command General Putnam abandoning their lines on Long Island. Also included are a table of distances from New York to twenty six towns in the colonies, population estimate s of the colonies for 1774 and an estimate of both the English and Provincial Forces. At the bottom At the bottom of the map is the latest news ‘Sepr. 15.th 1776. British Forces under Genl. Sir Willm. Howe, landed on New York Island. – Same Day the Provincials retreat to their Works at Kings Bridge. – Troops take possession of the CITY, same evening.’
