This map of Tartaria is based on that of Blaeu’s which was compiled with information from the English and Dutch explorers as well as the much earlier reports of Marco Polo. Small creatures appear to play in the desert just beyond the Great Wall. A number of legends fill the unexplored regions. The decorative title cartouche features a blanket over the back of a camel, the animal of choice for the famous silk route which traverses much of the map.
