The first map of southern Africa was published by Martin Waldseemuller in 1513 and is extremely rare. This slightly reduced derivative includes added vignettes of serpents, a dragon, elephant and local kings. The cartography derives from original Portuguese sources and displays the region below the equator. In recognition of the Portuguese discoveries down the coast and round the Cape a portrait of King Emanuel is placed riding a sea creature in the Indian Ocean. The whole map is finished with an ornate title banner. Lorenz Fries maps were first issued in the 1522 edition but by 1535 he had died. The blocks found their way into the possession of Melchoir and Gaspar Treschel. For this edition published in Lyon the brothers asked Michael Servetus to re-edit the text.
