In 1540 Sebastian Munster published his own edition of Ptolemy’s ‘Geographia’. It was to include a sizeable series of ‘modern’ maps. This particular map is the first map in Ptolemy’s European section and illustrates the British Isles with the intriguing west east orientation of Scotland. The trapezoidal format includes latitude and longitude markings. The ancient tribes aqre named in the two legends on the map. Provenance: acquired from Doreen Green in 1991; private English collection. Karrow (1993) 58/75b; Shirley (1991) no. 27.
