An early issue of this classic woodblock map of the Island of Taprobana or Ceylon with a typical early misconception bearing part of the Indian peninsula to the north east. A highly recognisable feature of the map is the large depiction of an elephant upper left. This image is derived from that of Gastaldi in 1548 and bears below it some descriptive text. This example of the map comes from it is believed the second 1542 edition of Sebastian Munster’s edition of Claudius Ptolemy’s “Geographia”. Karrow, R.W. (16 c.) 58/100.
MUNSTER, Sebastian
