From Munster’s edition of Ptolemy’s ‘Geographia’. A fascinating image of the perception of the Indian subcontinent. This Ptolemaic view of India is barely recognisable as a peninsula. It is defined by the Indus in the west and the Ganges in the east. To the south is ‘Pars Toprobanae’ (Sri Lanka). The Himalayas are at the top. The map is filled with a network of rivers, curiously depicted mountain ranges and toponyms. Karrow, R.W. (16 c.) 58/98.
