This large map of New Mexico and Arizona illustrates the major rivers, Apache and other native Indian tribes and copper mines. It is one of the first large scale maps of New Mexico. It is in fact a larger version of the William Pelham’s map published the preceding year. Wheat comments on the survey ‘that a start had been made but that precious little had been accomplished to date. Apparently all that had actually been done (and that is problematical) was to survey a line north from an initial point in the valley of the Rio Grande, near Albuquerque (which is not named), to Taos. The remainder of the map, which includes present Arizona, is taken up with the names of Indian tribes. About all that can be said for Mr. Pelham is that he got his `sketch’ in on time, but that practically no surveying had been done.” Wheat Transmississippi 854.
