Charles Smith was a noted engraver and publisher of maps. He became Map Seller Extraordinary to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales. The firm published a world atlas, globes, and two English county atlases. This quarto sized map came from ‘Smith’s New English Atlas’ first published in 1822, but the engraver James Gardner was utilised. The quarto atlas is much rarer than the folio, indeed there are only a very few examples of the first edition known. Hodson 84.2.
