This classic woodblock map of the Island of Taprobana is mistakenly entitled Sumatra. It does in fact depict the island of Ceylon with a typical early misconception bearing part of the Indian peninsula to the north east. A highly recognisable feature of the map is the large depiction of an elephant upper left. This image is derived from that of Gastaldi in 1548 and bears below it some descriptive text. The map comes from editions of Sebastian Munster’s “Cosmographia.” Karrow, R.W. (16 c.) 58/100.
