Three rare early works on surveying, geometry and dialling, all in their first editions. Hopton’s treatise on surveying bears a circular woodcut map of England and Wales on the title page which is repeated on pages 2 and 86. A different map entitled ‘Anglia’ is found on page 83 along with a world map on including ‘Virgina’ in America on page 3. Provenance: John Feilden, several inscriptions, one dated 1748, another on initial blank of Molyneux reading “Bought at Blackburn at an auction at ye Black Bul[l] of Mr. Smith of ye auctioneer”; further inscriptions and annotations by William Jennings, and Edmund Greenbury. Quarto (205 x 155 mm.), 3 works bound as 1, contemporary blind panelled sheep with ornate corners, rebacked with ribbed spine, ornate blind stamped compartments, gilt title. Title with woodcut map of England and Wales, repeated in the text with two further woodcut maps of the world and Anglia, several other woodcut illustrations, lacks 13 leaves (signatures F and I, advertisement leaf and 2 blanks), early ink annotation on one plate and title. [Bound with] LUCAR, Cyprian. 1590. ‘A Treatise named Lucarsolace’, 1 folding plate rebacked (of 4), numerous woodcut illustrations in the text, lacking title and final blank, small area of loss to Aii. [Bound with] MOLYNEAUX, William. 1686. ‘Sciothericum Telescopicum; or, A New Contrivance of Adapting a Telescope to an Horizontal Dial For Observing The moment of Time by Day or Night’. Dublin, Andrew Crook and Samuel Helsham, lacks leaf L4 and folding plate, tears repaired to M2, numerous early annotations.
