A very attractive chart of the Atlantic Ocean showing Europe and west Africa and the Americas. The map is described as a sea and land map and despite its initial appearance as a sea chart does in fact depict a large amount of detail on land. In North America this extends as far as the headwaters of the Missouri River. The cartouche top right bears a portrait of Joseph II (Holy Roman Emporer 1765-90) and the double headed eagle of the Hapsburg family. A more simple French title appears lower left. Top centre is a further cartouche with an empty dedication possibly indicating that this is an early proof. Captain Wohlers (1720-1813) is known to have engraved a few charts however in this case the engraver is named lower right as F. A. Pingeling. Little is known of him.
