David Loggan’s ‘Oxonia Illustrata’ published in Oxford 1675 is generally considered one of the finest English engraved topographical works of the seventeenth. Loggan (1635-1700?) was born in Danzig and came to England about 1653. By 1665 he was living near Oxford and in 1669 was appointed engraver to the University. In the year the ‘Oxonia’ was published he married. A fine engraving of the Quadrangle of the old schools building centred on the Tower of the Five Orders. It is most famously known as the entrance to the Bodleian Library which is in fact behind where the viewer is standing.
