Philippe Briet (1601-1668) was born in Abbeville, and became a Jesuit at eighteen years old. His ‘Parallela Geographiae’ was both a modern and a classical geography work. The first volume appeared in 1648; the second and a supplement were published in 1649. There were no less than 144 maps in total, and it is considered a well written methodical work. It is a rare work published in Paris by Pierre Mariette. Briet taught the humanities in various institutions including the Paris College. He died after a long illness in 1668.
