The commonly held perception that Blaeu was more of a leader in cartography than Jansson does not hold in this case. Here Jansson took the lead with his multi-volume town books, a feet not undertaken since Braun & Hogenberg in 1572. It was to contain 500 plates of cities and towns throughout the world. The spur for this was his acquisition of the Braun & Hogenberg plates from Abraham Hogenberg in 1653.
