This diagrammatic map of the roads of England and Wales was first published prior to 1732. This has been deduced by Donald Hodson who identified John Bowles’ address at Cheapside erased from a later edition. Bowles left that address in 1732. There is no known example of the first state. The roads are the main feature of the map and are laid down in virtually straight double ruled lines. The computed distance in miles between towns are plotted. This is an example of the third state with the imprint of Thomas Bowles and John Bowles and Son. An Explanation appears lower right with the ornate title cartouche upper right. The map appears in “H. Moll’s British Atlas” of 1753, an extremely rare edition in which only 4 known examples survive. Shirley Bowles 5.3; Hodson 178.
