This map of central Asia is from the first Venetian edition of Ptolemy’s ‘Geographia’. It is one of the earliest known examples of two-colour printing in cartography. The text and maps were overseen by Bernardo Silvano or Eboli. The major regions are named in red, more local ones in black and use metal inset type. This map covers central Asia from latitudes 36 degrees north to 63 degrees which includes most of western China and the old silk routes. There was only one edition. Karrow, R.W.
