Some mystery surrounds this map as it was clearly engraved for Joan Blaeu shortly before his death in 1673; signs of his imprint can be discerned on the plate. ‘It has been suggested that Blaeu intended this special map for the Spanish edition of the Atlas Maior which was never completed.’ (Shirley). No example of the Blaeu state has been located? Shirley 459.
