This map of Nova Scotia is engraved by John Gibson and appeared in Emanuel Bowen’s ‘Atlas Minimus’ first published in 1758. This is an example of the second state issued in 1792 which bears a slightly re-written block of text upper right. John Gibson (fl.1750-1787) was an engraver who worked for several of the publishers of the day, including John Newbery (1713-67). Newbery had married the widow of William Carnan in 1740, the owner and publisher of ‘The Reading Mercury and Oxford Gazette’ and at first, he continued to run business. It was one of the earliest papers outside of London. Then in 1744 he moved to London. Newbery was the first publisher to focus on the market for children’s books most of which he priced around 6d. or 1s. In 1758 Newberry published the ‘Atlas Minimus’, with plates engraved by Gibson. This was followed by a similar sized ‘New and Accurate Maps of the Counties of England and Wales’ in 1759. Kershaw (1993-98) no. 789; Phillips (1909-) 6001; Sanderson (1971) NMM 306; Shirley (2004) T.Gib 1a no. 39.
