A very attractive large detailed map of Switzerland published in London by William Faden. He states that it was drawn from the trigonometrical observations of Sir George Shuckburgh-Evelyn taken in 1775. Interestingly all the text is in French. The later 1799 edition is more usually found, this is the original first issue dated 1778 in the title. In the lower left corner is a list of all the glaciers in Switerland with a view nearby of ‘Chamouny’ (Chamonix). A cross section of the mountains is in the lower right corner with the upper two bearing ornate cartouches. Faden joined the firm of Thomas Jefferys two years after Jefferys death in 1771. By 1783 he was in control of the firm. He is particularly noted for undertaking new surveys and for publishing foreign works in England.
