Although this finely engraved chart refers in the title to Prèvost’s ‘Histoire Générale des Voyages’ this map is not from that work. We have been unable to determine its origin. The chart displays the Pacific coastline of Central and South America from Acapulco to the Straits of Magellan. This is the coastline focused on in the famous Spanish Derretero’s of the late seventeenth century. The coastline south of Valparaiso is shown separately and an inset shows the “Baye de St. François” by Cape Horn. The Galapagos chain are displayed in some detail too.
