This map was published in Samuel Augustus Mitchell’s ‘New General Atlas’. The atlas was first issued in 1860. There is evidence to suggest that Mitchell wasn’t in fact either a cartographer or engraver, his role is more that of an editor. The chief cartographer and engraver of Mitchell’s publications is James H Young. This is an early map of Alaska dated the year of its acquisition by the United States for $7,200,000. It was known at the time as Seward’s Folly after its main architect Secretary Seward. It illustrates the few settlements within the State and apart from the river network little is still known of the interior. Sitka is here named New Archangel. Baskes 66; Falk (1983) 1867-7.
