In the early 1860’s Alvin Jewitt Johnson took control of the atlas publishers G. Woolworth Colton. His ‘New Illustrated Family Atlas’ brought out a whole new series of maps into the upheaval of the American Civil War raging at the time. This map displays the city of New York including Central Park enclosed by development. An inset extends the coverage to the tip of Manhattan. Ristow (1985) p. 325.
