The FIRST AVAILABLE ENGLISH MAP OF AUSTRALIA. It is pre-dated only by the James Moxon playing card map first published in 1677 of which no known example survives. Of the second edition of 1691 only one known example survives. This Herman Moll map of Australia was published in the five volume ‘Atlas Geographus: Or, A Compleat System of Geography’, a very rare work. It was first issued in parts from 1708 and in volume form between 1711-1717. The map itself records largely Dutch knowledge including those of Dirck Hartog in 1616 on the west coast, Jan Carstensz in 1623 on Cape York, Peter Nuyt in 1627 along the south coast, Gerrit de Witt in 1628 on the north west coast and Abel Tasman’s second voyage of 1644 along the north coast. The more recent English travels of William Dampier in 1699 at ‘Sharks Bay’ on the west coast are noted. Shirley BL T.Moll no. 82; Tooley Australia pl. 113, nos. 908 & 1529.
