This early lithographic view of the west is from the official ‘Surveys and Reports to Find the Most Practical and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean’. It was conducted at the behest of the Secretary of War. The survey of the north west was enthusiastically carried out by Governor Isaac I. Stevens, the first Governor of Washington Territory. He was keen to see a railroad link to the region. This however did not occur until the 1890s. This print of Mount Rainier in the then Washington Territory was produced by J. H. Stanley after a sketch by Dr. Cooper.
