This detailed map of the Mississippi Territory established in 1802 covers the region of present-day Mississippi and Alabama. The exception is the territory here marked West Florida which would take the future states to the Gulf Coast. This land was still in the possession of the Spanish and despite American claims it was not until 1812 that it was added. In the north-west corner of the map is Fort Pickering on Chickasaw Bluff, near the future site of Memphis. Just below is a region labelled Upper Mississippi Company, and east of there, the Tennessee Company takes in the Tennessee River watershed in northern Alabama. The Georgia Company occupies the middle of the map. Numerous Indian tribes, villages and Indian Paths are shown, including the Natchez Trace. There are a number of forts located including Ft. Stoddert on the Mobile River, Ft. Adams on the Mississippi, and Ft. McHenry at Walnut Hills, later the site of Vicksburg. Drawn by Samuel Lewis and engraved by D. Fairman the map accompanies Lewis’ ‘A New and Elegant General Atlas …’ An important early map of the region. Phillips (Atlases) 702; Ristow p. 265.
