In the early 1860’s Alvin Jewitt Johnson took control of the atlas publishers G. Woolworth Colton. His ‘New Illustrated Family Atlas’ brought out a whole new series of maps into the upheaval of the American Civil War raging at the time. This map more than most in the atlas highlights the conflict and the area of many of its most brutal battles. Ristow (1985) p. 325.
