Map of the British Isles, Showing the Cities, Boroughs & Market Towns, the Principal Villages, Railways, Mail & Turnpike Roads, Navigable Rivers & Canals with the Soundings & Sand Banks round the Coast

W C Hobson, London, 1842
995 x 1225 mm., in full early wash colour, dissected and laid on contemporary publishers cloth, as issued, some very light offsetting, small surface tear repaired in St. George’s Channel, otherwise in good condition. Complete with the original publishers ornate blind panelled calf slipcase, with ornate gilt spine and red calf gilt title label, lightly rubbed.
The FIRST EDITION of Walker’s large scale map of the British Isles highlighting the transportation networks available. With an attractive florid engraved title upper right, an inset upper left includes the Orkney and Shetland Islands, a smaller one lower left highlights the Channel Islands. Next to this is an Explanation. Here it states that the mileage’s posted by the towns reflect the distances from London or Edinburgh if in Scotland and Dublin if in Ireland. There is one later edition recorded of 1854. Provenance: Roger Baynton-Williams 1985; private collection of Rodney Shirley. British Library Maps 1080.(14.).
