A fascinating MANUSCRIPT RECORD of POSTAL ROADS, illustrated with EIGHT MANUSCRIPT MAPS. The first leaf bears a map of the road from ‘Belfast to Dublin’ with mileage’s posted. This is followed by a table detailing the charges by stage for postage. The next table details ‘Hollyhead to London by Shrewsbury, Oxford & c’, each stop bears a fascinating comment. For example Woodstock: “We posted from Blenheim 13 of Aug 1821, setting off at half past five; dined and slept at Oswestry 116 miles, at 10. The Bear Inn is the best in Woodstock”. There follows tables for Oxford to London, London to Cheltenham, Cheltenham to Liverpool, Hollyhead to Bristol, Btah to London, London to Richmond. There follows an interesting note “For particular account of Oxford, Bath, Bristol see Cary’s Itinerary between page 562 and 563”. Three small maps on the page illustrate the route from Hollyhead to London. Two pages of single page maps follow: ‘Liverpool to Cheltenham, Oxford & c.’ and ‘Shrewsbury to Bristol, Bath, London’. The following page is a double page map of Hollyhead to London with table upper right. The final double page map features London entitled ‘A Map of the Curiosities of London’. The two main postal routes through the city are shown. John Nash’s nascent Regent’s Park is taking shape upper left. A fascinating detailed record of the postal system in England and Wales in the early 1820s.
