An attractive map of the British Isles derived and slightly reduced in size from Jan Jansson’s similarly entitled map first published in 1638. Unsigned, it includes an inset of the Orkney’s upper right, the royal arms upper left, and title cartouche. Slightly crude in engraving style it is found in the volume X of the multi-volume ‘Theatrum Europeaum’ by Matthaus Merian. This is an example of the second state as issued in 1703 with alterations to the lettering. Provenance: Doreen Green 1997; private English collection. Art Kelly private correspondence; not in Shirley (1988).
ANONYMOUS – MERIAN, Matthaus
