In 1638 Jan Jansson published this improved map of the entire British Isles derived from an earlier one by Willem Blaeu. Jansson’s map is quite a bit larger which affords greater detail and more place-names. The engraving is sharper too. The map bears an inset of the Orkney Islands top right and is decorated with three further cartouche. This issue bears French text and matches the pagination for the 1642 or later issues. There is only one state of the map. Provenance: Weinreb & Douwma 1973, private English collection. Shirley, R.W. (BI to 1650) 487, pl. 134; Van der Krogt, P. (Atlantes) 5000:1D.
