An attractive large early map of Brasil. It extends from the mouth of the River Amazon to S. Vincent in the south. At the time of publication there were a number of Portuguese possessions in the region. The area was divided by Portugal in to 14 Capitaineries, all in coastal regions and each coloured in outline. Each was responsible for their defence and development. The interior is not ignored with several notations on the area. The lower right of the map features an extensive region of lakes to the head of the River Paraguay. The map is embellished with a title and scale cartouches. Pastoureau, M. Fer II C, #98.
