The trade-card of Joseph Roux and son (1725-93) who was a hydrographer, map publisher and manufacturer of navigating instruments from Marseilles. Interestingly some of his manuscripts still survive in the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. The work on the Mediterranean Sea was so highly praised that Lord Nelson carried a copy of the work on board H.M.S. Victory from 1802. That copy is in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. The tracks of the ship in 1803 and 1805 are found in it; Nelson famously died at Trafalgar in 1805. Howse & Sanderson p. 91; Johnson (2004) ‘The modest life and times of Joseph Roux’ pp. 27-37; cf Smith (1978) ‘The Artful Roux, Marine Painters of Marseille’ pp. 2-3.
