In the early 1860’s Alvin Jewitt Johnson took control of the atlas publishers G. Woolworth Colton. His ‘New Illustrated Family Atlas’ brought out a whole new series of maps into the upheaval of the American Civil War raging at the time. This map identifies the new State of West Virginia born out of the divisions caused by the War. It was created 20 June 1863. Ristow (1985) p. 325.
