In the early 1860’s Alvin Jewitt Johnson took control of the atlas publishers G. Woolworth Colton. His ‘New Illustrated Family Atlas’ brought out a whole new series of maps into the upheaval of the American Civil War raging at the time. This map of the American North West displays the routes of Lieut. Warren in 1855 along those of Fremont and others and trading routes to Denver and elsewhere. The Union Pacific Railroad crosses the bottom of the map along with other proposed railway lines. Ristow (1985) p. 325.
