An early example of one of the most decorative engraved maps of Malta and Gozo ever to be published. This example is without the two cracks found in later issues of the printing plate. The map is dated 1689 in the ornate title cartouche lower left which might indicate it was first published in the work entitled ‘Il Mediterraneo’ which is similarly dated, an example of which may be found in the British Library. The map is surrounded with 63 coats-of-arms of the Grand Masters of the Knights of Malta over nearly 600 years. The map is dedicated to Giorgio Corner, the Cardinal and Bishop of Padua, who was closely related to the Doges of Venice. In fact his name is actually Giorgio Cornaro. Goss, J. (Art) 5.20; Mason ‘Maps of Malta in the Order of St. John’ no. 60; Shirley (BL Atlases) T.CORO-6a no. 31.
CORONELLI, Vincenzo Maria

450 x 610 mm., with close margins but intact, small tear just into the image upper margin to the right of the centrefold, otherwise a good example.
