Paolo Forlani (fl.1560-71) was born in Verona but was active as an engraver in Venice from about 1560 to 1571. The production of this map reflects the ensuing invasion by the Ottoman Empire of Cyprus. It was published on 10 May 1570 and reflects on the fortification of the nearby coast of Asia Minor. On 8 September 1570 they took control of Nicosia and the conflict ended with Turkish control confirmed following the fall of Famagusta on 1 August 1571. This map displays the island of Cyprus and the nearby coastline of Asia Minor. The depiction of Cyprus is drawn from earlier sources but is improved by such information as the Roman viaduct from Kythrea to Salamis appearing for the first time on a map. The coast of Asia Minor is drawn from the larger map of Giacomo Gastaldi. Meurer (2004) no. 90; Stylianou (1980) no. 39 fig. 42; Tooley (1939) 185; Woodward (1990) no. 88; Zacharakis (1992) ‘A Catalogue of Printed Maps of Greece, 1477-1800’, no. 1029.
