This map comes from the official account of the First Voyage of the Pacific by Captain James Cook first published in 1773. It records the voyage of Captain Carteret (1766-69) to the Solomon Islands as they are now called in the South Pacific. An inset details Carteret’s Island. For the compilation of this work Hawkesworth received £6,000 from the Admiralty. This example is from the first French edition of 1774 engraved by Benard. Refer Shirley G.Hawk 1a no. 11.
