Gerard Mercator is renowned for introducing the Projection named after him and for being the first to use the term ‘Atlas’. In 1595 the third and final part of the ‘Atlas Sive Cosmographicae, pars altera’, was published in Duisberg posthumously by his son Rumold Mercator. It included amongst others this map of Ireland. After the acquisition of Mercator’s stock in 1604 by Jodocus Hondius the production of the atlas moved to Amsterdam. Bonar-Law pp. 18-21; Koeman I 5900:1A.1.
