This map is known by only two examples of a later state by Clement de Jonghe. Its most noteworthy feature is the presence of two Tierra del Fuegos. Its earlier state is unknown but can be deduced from its presence in a Cornelis Claesz catalogue of 1609. The geography dates from an earlier date still but no example survives of its original issue. The complete work is a four sheet map but here we offer that covering North America. The curious array of islands in Canada is first seen on a manuscript map by Cornelis Doedsz of 1600 and in the period 1604-06 a number of Dutch world maps appeared with them. Their origin is unclear. Other influences can be seen from both that of Cornelis Claesz, c.1602, and Jodocus Hondius, 1606. The sources for the various scenes are described by Schilder, the latest being that top right illustrating the Dutch arrival on the River Gabon first published in Peieter de Marees’ Beschrijvinge ende Historische verhael vant Gout Koninckrijck van Gunea by Claesz in 1602. The view in North America depicts the collecting of salt. Schilder provides further details identifying Colijn (1584-1637) as an apprentice under Claesz who set up as an independent bookseller and publisher in Amsterdam. He identifies the sale of Colijn’s stock on 15 March 1638, at which time de Jonghe (c.1625-77) could not have acquired the plates as he was too young.

Clement de Jonghe took possession of the plates some time later and added his own imprint, Clement de Ionghe excudit to the lower left. He died in 1677 and his main period of activity was in the 1660s. De Jonghe compiled atlases from the maps of other cartographers alongside his own. Only three examples of the complete map are known to survive today, all are in the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris.
