Charles Jones’ important revised edition of Hoyle’s work on sports and pastimes was first published in 1790. In that edition for the first time appeared a three page description of “Goff or Golf” at the end of the book, described at this early time as “The favorite summer amusement in Scotland”. It goes on to describe “Light Balls are used when playing with the wind, and heavy ones against it”. The 1790 edition appears to be the first of its kind to include such a lengthy description of the game. Also included are sections on cricket (the Star and Garter Rules of 1774), tennis (“a Net hangs across the middle”), billiards, chess, draughts backgammon, and various card games such as whist, etc. This apparently reset edition bears the chapter on golf on pages 299-301.
