An extremely rare topographical work on the University and city of Cambridge by Richard Harraden (1756-1838), last seen complete in auction in 1971. This example matches the collation of that described in Abbey except for the two plates of Nevil’s Court, Trinity College, being transposed and ‘Corpus Christi or Bene’t College’ placed before the ‘Lecture Rooms’. The title refers to ‘Six Large Views’ which form a separately issued work (550 x 750 mm.) issued in paper wrappers in 1798. In 1800 he published this oblong folio work which consists of ‘Twenty Four Smaller Views’ of the colleges and other scenes around Cambridge. An extremely rare work. The example in Cambridge University Library (Cam.bb.800.1) lacks the frontispiece which is present here. One further incomplete example appeared at auction in 1984. The English Short Title Catalogue ascribe the work to his son Richard Bankes Harraden (1778-1862) with whom he did work but it is unlikely that the son would be responsible for its publication. Richard Harraden was born in London to a physician from Flintshire. The National Biography alludes to him having lived in Paris and retuning following the fall of the Bastille in 1789. He settled in Cambridge in 1798. He was an artist and aquatint engraver specialising in topographical views. The plates here are all fine aquatints noted for the quality of the engraving which was undertaken by James Harraden (nd), possibly a son, John Cartwright (1748-1817), John William Edy (1760-1817 or later), John Hassell (1767-1825), and James Newton (nd). The Preface describes each of the plates and includes a list of them. It also mentions the price of the set as ‘2l, 2s.’ The whole was printed by John Burges in Cambridge, a highly rated printer to the University. He was recognised for the quality of his typography. Provenance: G. David Booksellers, Cambridge, 2016; private English collection. Abbey (1952) 77; ESTC T214657; Mackenzie (1998); ODNB; Sotheby’s 8 November 1971 lot 122; refer Upcott Supplement 590*.
