A very rare map of France published by Maurice Bouguereau from Tours in his “Théâtre François, où sont comprises les chartes générales et particulières de la France”. This is the first printed atlas of France. The map differs from the version in the Ortelius ‘Theatrum’ by nature of the cartouche. It can be found both with and without text to the verso in the book, this example is without the text. This is the first of the important derivatives of Plancius’ map of 1592. Schilder MCN IV pp. 381-3 ill. 15.15.
BOUGUEREAU, Maurice

Gallia: Geographica Galliæ descriptio

Paris, 1593
385 x 470 mm., early outline colour. A three centimetre tear from the bottom up into the compass but none of the paper is missing. Trimmed to the margins, some paper thinning supported by backing onto archival paper.
