A fine detailed and decorative view of Frankenberg in Hesse, Germany. It is situated on the Eder river not far from Kassel, directly east of Dusseldorf an north of Frankfurt. Dominating the town is the Liebrauenkirche completed in 1353. The plate is bound in the third volume of the ‘Civitates Orbis Terrarum’. First published in 1581, this example is from the first German edition published the following year. Compiled by George Braun (1541-1622) the Canon of Cologne Cathedral. Braun produced a total of over 500 city views and maps published in six parts between 1572 and 1617. Most of the engraving was the work of Simon Novellanus and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590), many after drawings by George Hoefnagel although this one is unidentified. Koeman II B & H 3 no. 38; Van der Krogt 4, 1358.
