Pieter van den Keere had first engraved the English county plates c.1599. These made there way into the hands of George Humble and were issued under the title of ‘England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland Described’. It came to be known as the ‘miniature Speed’ as Humble also published the folio John Speed atlas, and here utilised the text. Various editions up to 1676 were published. In 1646 George Humble’s son William expanded the atlas by including a foreign ‘Prospect’ with 20 maps of the world. Skelton ‘Bibliographical Note to the Facsimile’, 1966.
