A rare map of the recently created United States of America. The map appeared in some of the later editions of Robert De Vaugondy’s folio atlas which was issued by Charles Francois Delamarche. It takes in much of lower Canada and extends from Maine to Florida in the south and westwards to the Spanish colonies on the Rio Grande. There are legends throughout which detail explorers routes such as De Soto and La Salle along with the local Indians. A note lower right details the thirteen original States and their respective capitals. A fascinating addition at the bottom outlines the names of 10 further proposed states by Thomas Jefferson including Silvania, Michigania, Chersonesus, Arsenistpia, Metropotamia, Illinoia, Saratoga, Washington, Polypotamia, and Pelisypia. A very attractive title cartouche finishes off this fine map. Karpinski CIII; Seller & Van Ee 187 (Boudet variant ed.).
