During the second half of the sixteenth century Nuremberg became a great distribution centre for news literature. Amongst this dissemination of material were broadsides illustrations of news stories throughout Europe. The invasion of Cyprus by the Ottoman Empire was big news. This map by Balthasar Jenichen (d.1599) illustrates the naval fleets offshore surrounding the island at a time before the fall of Famagusta on 1 August 1571. Jenichen was a goldsmith, engraver and publisher. His map is drawn from a woodcut by Hans Rogel of Augsburg in 1570.
