Pen and ink manuscript map of the settlement of Derventio dated ’31 Sept. 1721′, now known as Little Chester, the site of the original settlement of Derby centred about a half-mile to the north of the current city. The River Derwent is seen at the bottom with the site of the old ruins of a Roman bridge, the site today of Parker’s Piece field. At the top of the map is Ricning Street or Ryknield Street the old Roman Road now more familiarly known as the Icknield Way and today at Little Chester is the Mansfield Road. It is pasted onto a contemporary engraving by J. Bowdell of Tissington Church, Derbyshire, dated 1773.
