This map of the Holy Land is found in editions of Sebastian Munster’s ‘Cosmography’ from 1588. The title refers to the twelve tribes, however they are not shown on the map itself. The map is derived from that of Abraham Ortelius first issued in 1570. Two insets provide descriptions of Judea and Jordan. The title is found above the upper neatline. Sebastian Münster (1488-1552) was a geographer, mathematician and professor at Basle University. Along with Abraham Ortelius later, he was one of the first publishers to identify his sources and authorities. His maps were not superseded for influence until those of Ortelius. Laor (1986) 532.
